Prerequisites for Examination

2010 ACVPM Exam Information

Note: Cut-off date for application is November 15, 2009

To qualify to sit for the college examination, the candidate must:

  • Graduate from a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited or approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association or possession of a certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG), or be legally qualified (licensed) to practice veterinary medicine in some state, province, territory, or possession of the United States or other country, and

  • Have an acceptable amount of documented experience in one or more areas of veterinary preventive medicine (as defined in Article II of the Constitution and Article VIII of the Bylaws). A portion of the experience may be obtained through a formal education program. The suitability of all experience, including the education and training portions, will be reviewed and approved by the Credentials Committee whose decision will be final, and

  • Have a history of unquestionable moral character and professional behavior.

  • Candidates must be sponsored by a Diplomate of the College who will attest to the suitability of the applicant's professional experience, character and qualifications for the specialty of veterinary preventive medicine.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Candidates must apply to take the examination by completing the application form and submitting the application fee. The forms and detailed instructions may be obtained from the web site (Certification Files link is above) or by contacting the Executive Vice President.

Re-Application Procedures

For those who have been deferred to sit the ACVPM Board Qualifying Exam or failed one or more parts of the qualifying exam in the past year and intend to sit the exam again this year:

Send a letter of intent along with a re-application fee of $325 made payable to the ACVPM to the Executive Vive President prior to November 15th of the current year for which you wish to re-apply.

Include current personal data such as your home address and telephone number, business address and telephone number, e-mail address, current employment position and job title.

Please visit the ACVPM Website and review the up-dated study topics and references and note that examples of the multiple choice questions and the five essay questions from last year's exam are now available for review.

CERTIFICATION:

A veterinarian who has satisfied the requirements as to character, training, experience and competence in veterinary preventive medicine including satisfactory completion of the certifying examination is eligible for certification. Certification as a Diplomate of the ACVPM is complete upon receiving a confirmatory vote by a majority of the members of the Executive Board.
